Loudoun County Transportation Guide: Ashburn, Leesburg, Sterling, Purcellville and Middleburg

The Lay of the Land

Eastern Loudoun begins at the airport boundary. Sterling sits immediately north of Dulles along Route 28 and Route 7. Ashburn lies to the northwest and has become known for its concentration of data centers as well as neighborhoods, hotels and the county's newer commercial districts. Leesburg, the county seat, is farther west on Route 7 with a historic downtown and a courthouse district. Beyond Leesburg the county turns rural, with Purcellville as the main town in the west and Middleburg, in the south, serving as the center of Virginia horse country and a hub for wineries.

Route 7, Route 28 and the Greenway

Three roads carry most of the county's traffic. Route 7 runs east-west from Tysons through Sterling and Ashburn to Leesburg and on to Purcellville and Winchester, changing character from a divided highway to a rural road along the way. Route 28 runs north-south past the airport's eastern edge, linking Sterling with the Route 7 corridor to the north and Chantilly and Manassas to the south.

The Dulles Greenway continues the Route 267 corridor west from the airport area to Leesburg. It is a privately operated toll road, and tolls are collected electronically. For travelers headed from the airport to Ashburn or Leesburg it is the direct route, and a chauffeured flat rate includes whatever tolls the trip involves. Drivers who prefer to avoid the toll typically use Route 7 or Route 28, which are slower at peak hours.

The Silver Line Into Loudoun

Metrorail's Silver Line extends past the Dulles station into Loudoun County with stations serving the Ashburn area. That gives eastern Loudoun a rail connection to Reston, Tysons and the District for the first time. The stations are oriented toward the Route 267 corridor rather than individual neighborhoods, so most riders drive or are dropped off at the station. For an airport trip from Ashburn with light luggage it is an option; for a family with bags or a pre-dawn flight, it usually is not. Check the current schedule, particularly for early morning and late evening service.

Business Travel in the Data-Center Corridor

Ashburn and the surrounding area host one of the largest concentrations of data centers anywhere, and that brings a steady flow of engineers, vendors, auditors and executives through Dulles. These sites are often in secured campuses with gated entrances and visitor procedures, and addresses can be ambiguous across large parcels. When booking a pickup or drop-off, provide the facility name and the specific gate or visitor entrance.

Dulles to Ashburn is a short trip, which makes it easy to run a chauffeur from the airport to a site visit and back for a same-day flight. Wine Country: Purcellville, Middleburg and the Back Roads

Western Loudoun's wineries and breweries are spread across rural roads that are beautiful and slow. Middleburg is reached from the airport area by way of Route 50, and Purcellville by Route 7 past Leesburg. Many tasting rooms sit on gravel lanes off two-lane roads where cellular coverage and rideshare availability may be limited.

A chauffeured vehicle booked for the day is the standard approach: the group rides together, nobody is responsible for driving after tastings, and the return to a hotel in Leesburg, Reston or the District is confirmed in advance. Leesburg and Its Events

Leesburg combines a historic downtown with government offices, a hospital, hotels and event venues that host weddings and corporate retreats. Farther west, Purcellville and the small towns along Route 7 and Route 9 host their own fairs, markets and seasonal events, and the roads into them are two lanes. For a wedding or a corporate retreat at a western Loudoun venue, a Sprinter van or a pair of SUVs from a single operator is easier to manage than asking guests to find their own way back after dark.

Dulles Is the Home Airport

For Loudoun residents and visitors, Dulles is close enough that an airport run is measured in minutes from most of the eastern county, and under an hour from the far west outside peak traffic. That proximity is why early flights are so common here, and why a confirmed pickup matters: rideshare availability at 4:30 a.m. in Purcellville or Middleburg is not something to count on.
