Washington Region Airport Transportation Guide: IAD, DCA and BWI

Choosing the Airport

The airport often chooses itself once you know the destination. Reagan National operates under a federal perimeter rule that limits most nonstop flights to a set distance from the airport, with a limited number of exemptions. In practice that means many West Coast and nearly all international itineraries route through Dulles or BWI. Dulles is the region's primary international airport, with the customs facilities and long-haul carriers to match. BWI is known for a large Southwest presence and other value-oriented carriers, and it can be the sensible choice for travelers in Maryland or on the north side of the region.

Beyond routes, consider where you are going after you land. For downtown DC, Arlington or Capitol Hill, Reagan is closest. For Tysons, Reston, Herndon or Loudoun County, Dulles is closer than it looks on a map. For Baltimore, Columbia and Annapolis, BWI is the natural choice.

Getting To and From Dulles

Dulles is reached by road primarily through the Dulles Access Road, which runs from the Capital Beltway to the terminal, and by Route 28 from the north and south. Metrorail's Silver Line has a station at the airport connected to the main terminal, which makes rail a workable option for travelers with light luggage headed toward Reston, Tysons or downtown, though the ride into the District is a long one. On-airport parking ranges from economy lots served by shuttles to garages near the terminal, and rideshare pickups use a designated area.

Car service is the door-to-door option. A chauffeur meets domestic arrivals at baggage claim or the curb and international arrivals outside the customs exit, tracks the flight, and includes 45 minutes of complimentary wait on domestic arrivals and 60 on international. Getting To and From Reagan National

Reagan National is the easiest of the three to reach by transit. The Blue and Yellow Lines stop at a station connected to the terminals by walkways, and downtown is a few stops away. By road, the George Washington Parkway and the 14th Street Bridge connect it to the District and Arlington. Garages are close to the terminal, and rideshare and taxi pickups are organized by terminal. Because the airport is compact and the drive is short, a car service pickup at DCA is quick, and the main value is a chauffeur staging precisely at a busy curb.

Getting To and From BWI

BWI has a rail station a short distance from the terminal served by MARC Penn Line commuter trains and Amtrak, with a free shuttle between the station and the terminal. Baltimore's light rail also serves the airport directly. From the Washington side, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and I-95 are the main road approaches. Parking is spread across several lots and garages with shuttles, and rideshare pickups are consolidated on the lower level.

Timing: How Early to Leave

Timing depends on the airport, the flight and the hour. Dulles departures should account for the drive, the check-in and security process, and for international flights the earlier bag-drop cutoffs airlines enforce. Reagan is faster on the ground, but the roads into it during weekday rush hours are among the most congested in the region. BWI adds a longer drive for anyone coming from Virginia.

Traffic patterns matter as much as distance. Morning rush runs inbound toward the District and the Beltway, evening rush runs outbound. A trip from Loudoun to Dulles against the flow is very different from a trip from downtown to Dulles at 5 p.m. A car service builds this into the pickup time; if you are driving yourself, add margin on weekday afternoons and on any day with weather.

Connecting Between Airports

Split itineraries are common: arrive at Dulles on an international flight, depart from Reagan or BWI on a domestic one. Transit connections exist but involve transfers and take time. Dulles to Reagan by road is roughly 30 miles, and Dulles to BWI is considerably farther, so plan on the better part of an hour to well over an hour depending on traffic.
